Articles for Practice Writing Abstracts
Articles for Practice Writing Abstracts
Please select any THREE of these articles, and practice writing an abstract for each article, based on the article's content.
You are recommend to take the following questions into consideration when writing an abstract:
- What was the initially-proposed goal or hypothesis of the research? Was the primary research question answered?
- What were the main results/implications of the research presented?
- What key context of setting or background is necessary to understand the final results?
- What methods/procedures, if any, are necessary to be able to understand the implications?
- How can this all be summarized concisely, while emphasizing the results/implications, in a way that would quickly gain the reader's interest?
As you write your practice abstracts, you should be able to answer each of these five questions personally, but not necessarily all within the actual text of the written abstract.
While there is a variety of subjects covered among the provided articles (petrology, sedimentology, seismology, climatology, etc), you are strongly encouraged to choose at least one paper from outside of your own personal sub-field of interest, so that you may be exposed to a wider variety of research topics, and writing styles. If you have any questions while completing this writing assignment, please do not hesitate to ask for help.
