At the University of Minnesota, there are additional learning tools that plug into the Canvas learning management system to provide enhanced features for teaching and learning. Depending on the class, you may be asked to take a quiz in multiple ways: the most commonly used options include Canvas Quiz, Proctorio, or Honorlock. Your instructor will likely provide more information about which option you will use.
In Canvas, a "quiz" can refer to exams, midterms, questionnaires, surveys, and knowledge checks. Canvas currently has two quiz tools in use, so you may see one or both in your courses, depending on the instructor's preferences and/or course assessment needs.
Proctorio is a remote proctoring service used with some classes when you take quizzes and exams in Canvas. Proctorio may record your webcam, your screen, your audio or other actions during the exam session and share that information with your instructor.
Students can install and use Proctorio on their own computers for no extra charge. Proctorio requires you to:
Use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. No other web browsers will work. Use a desktop or laptop computer with a stable internet connection. You cannot take the exams from mobile devices (e.g., iPhone, iPad, Android device, tablets, etc).
Honorlock is a remote proctoring solution to enhance academic integrity in online courses and assessments. Honorlock helps instructors focus on student success while ensuring academic integrity, privacy, and data security. Honorlock uses AI to detect visual clues from video input to flag suspicious behaviors and alerts the Live Pop-in™ proctors for immediate intervention during an exam.
Create a Chrome profile to use with Honorlock
Why do this? During the Spring 2025 semester, UMN is transitioning from Proctorio to Honorlock. Instructors may require students to use either exam proctoring tool. Both exam proctoring tools require Chrome extensions to function. Since these extensions conflict when used in the same Chrome profile, creating a new Chrome profile exclusively for use with exams proctored with Honorlock avoids technical issues. See the steps on how to set up your profile.
