4.0 Introduction to Building a Program

Learning Objectives

In this unit, we'll start to:

  • Describe successful OER programs at other institutions, noting specifically how they leverage local collaborations and alliances.
  • Synthesize examples of successful and unsuccessful OER programs into a set of best practices, including project/program management principles.

Why This Unit Is Important

This is the unit where we begin to move beyond definitions into application and action. We'll begin to build our bridge between the online portion of the certificate and the activities we'll be completing during the face-to-face portion in Minneapolis — activities such as practicing pitches, collaborating with peers, and expanding your action plan. We learn by doing, so let's start doing.

How This Fits Into the Larger Picture

You've learned a lot about open education by this point in the certificate program. As you move through this unit, keep this question in mind: "What does success look like?" How can you start to apply your knowledge to achieve success for you, your program, and your institution? This unit zooms out and transitions our view to the future — what does it mean to build a lasting, collaborative OER program? What are the programmatic actions you'll need to take to get there?
