Takeaways
Online exams are an important part of online course assessment, and of course it is important to make sure online exams are secure.
However, we feel the focus should be on designing and administering authentic online exams, applied and relevant, and reducing the stress of exam proctoring for instructors (who feel they must use strict measures to prevent academic misconduct) and for students (who are anxious because e-proctoring creates more hoops for them to jump over).
We encourage instructors to:
- work with students and educate them about academic integrity, code of conduct, course confidentiality, and the moral value of being honorable and honest.
- use design recommendations to tailor online exams to specific student audience(s) and course goals
- use e-proctoring only when absolutely necessary
- choose exam proctoring options carefully
- educate students about the choice of the proctoring tool and the proctoring process
- plan a lot of time to prepare, implement and troubleshoot exams that are proctored
