Recommended Practices for Using Proctorio

Below is the list of suggestions that instructors might find useful when setting up exams with Proctorio.

  • If possible, schedule a dedicated exam preparation session to talk to students about Proctorio, technical requirements, and proctoring process.
  • Whenever possible, avoid enabling video options to track and monitor students
    • Use video recording options ONLY when the most rigorous (severe) proctoring is a must
    • Avoid "Record Room" option: students will be asked to provide a panoramic view by moving their webcam at random moments during the test, which can be disrupting.
  • Whenever possible, allow “Re-entry".
    • If for technical reasons a student can not continue with the exam (e.g., connection drops, computer shuts down, etc.), only Proctorio staff (and only if “Re-entry with agent” has been selected by the instructor) can reset the exam and allow a new attempt.
  • Set the severity of suspicion as lenient to start with. If needed, you can change the severity level to moderate or severe even after a quiz is over, and it will immediately "re-grade" the suspicion score of student submissions.
  • Use Exam Flexibility feature to disable Proctorio for those who have limited access to technology or disability impairment.
  • Create and require all students to take a practice test first (not for points), so they can identify and resolve any technical issues before the real exam.
    • make sure the circumstances of the practice test imitate the circumstances of the real exam, as much as possible, e.g., all students, at the same time, the same settings, the same hardware/software, the same location, etc.
