ChimeIn and the Presenter User Experience

Let's start by speaking the same language

ChimeIn organizes content into "Chimes." Each Chime can contain one or more folders, and each folder can contain one or more questions (see figure below).

What does this mean to medical school staff and faculty?

So, for medical school purposes you might think of:

Chimes as your "course" or as the holding place for all content for a given course.
Folders as individual "classes" or "sessions" within that course or as a holding place for questions to be used with an individual teaching session.

A Chime organizational chart for the medical school might look something like the figure below.

A few other notes on Chime organization:

You can have as many questions as you like within a Chime.

However, questions must be "open" for students to access and answer them.
If you want to use ChimeIn as part of a real-time discussion, you can keep questions closed until the moment you want to pose the question to the students.
If you are planning an asynchronous session, questions will need to be left open.

You can have multiple folders within a Chime.

Most of the time it makes sense to have one folder for each session you teach within a given course/Chime, as demonstrated in the chart above. However, there may be reasons why you might want multiple folders for a single session. If you feel this makes sense for your purposes, we encourage you to discuss folder organization/set up with your Instructional Design or Course Management teams.
While we will not delve into Canvas Integration during this training, it maybe good to know from the starting line that Chimes integrated into Canvas do not allow you to create your own Chimes or folders. This should not be seen as a negative, in fact, integration is a very useful tool for grading and data tracking. However, Canvas Integrated ChimeIn questions will need to be set up by your Instructional Design or Course Management teams.

Every Chime has a custom URL and an access code (see figure below).

Participants can either join a chime by going to the ChimeIn homepage and entering that access code or by using the direct link.
If you want to track individual responses, participants must login in to ChimeIn before answering the Chime question.
Chimes that are integrated with Canvas require students to access the Chime through a Canvas Assignment.
