Engaging Faculty with Open Pedagogy

Open pedagogy empowers faculty to make education more equitable and inclusive, inviting students in as co-creators, and creating rich opportunities for deep and active learning.

To support you in guiding your faculty to realize the full potential of open pedagogy, we offer these key resources:

Introduction to Open Pedagogy Workshop

The Introduction to Open Pedagogy Workshop is an hourlong presentation for you to deliver to faculty on your campus as a means of equipping them with the tools they need to transform their classrooms with open pedagogy. The workshop introduces faculty to the concept of open pedagogy, demonstrating how its use makes learning more inclusive, showing examples of open pedagogy in practice, and pointing to a series of action steps for becoming open pedagogy practitioners.

  • The Introduction to Open Pedagogy Workshop slide deck Links to an external site. is openly licensed, and as such we welcome you to customize the workshop's content to suit your campus and faculty's needs.
  • The Train-the-Trainer: Introduction to Open Pedagogy Workshop video below from our 2023 OEN Engage! event will teach you how to effectively facilitate this workshop. It also explains how leading an open pedagogy learning circle for faculty and faculty support professionals can be an effective next step in engaging them with open pedagogy, following their participation in the workshop.

As a member, you also have the option to invite an OEN presenter to your campus to deliver this workshop, to help you get the ball rolling and serve as an example as you begin to lead your own local workshops. Learn more here.

Open Pedagogy Learning Circles

As our community has asked for more help understanding and using open pedagogy, we’ve created a curriculum to support you in facilitating Learning Circles, collaborative, resource-rich learning environments that serve as a space for faculty and faculty support professionals to explore and experiment with open pedagogy alongside one another.

Learning Circle Goals

    • Build a foundational understanding of open pedagogy to be expanded upon through activities that allow for a collaborative definition of open pedagogy.
    • Discover what open pedagogy does and how it can be incorporated in the classroom through exposure to a variety of engaging open pedagogy assignments.
    • Gain hands-on experience with open pedagogy through creation of a renewable assignment or digital learning object.

The video below walks you through the Open Pedagogy Learning Circle Curriculum and corresponding Canvas course that you can use as a framework to lead Open Pedagogy Learning Circles on your campus.

The OEN also facilitates open pedagogy learning circles each semester; check our Open Pedagogy webpage or contact Tanya at grosz045@umn.edu to find out when the next one is being offered.

Additional support materials, including the resources linked above, can be found under the Open Pedagogy tab of the Community Hub.
