Introduction to OER Adoption Workshop: Part I
The Introduction to OER Adoption Workshop raises awareness, educates, and, most importantly, engages faculty, by inviting them to explore a book in the Open Textbook Library after they have attended the workshop. They are then invited to write a review of a textbook. Of the faculty who attend a workshop, 66% write a review, and 47% adopt an open textbook, making it an effective method for increasing adoption of open textbooks at your institution or member institutions.
In this section, you can watch OEN member and presenter, Dr. Meggie Mapes of the University of Kansas, offer the Introduction to OER Adoption Workshop in two parts: Part 1 makes the case for open education; Part 2 offers solutions.
Introduction to OER Adoption Workshop Part I: Making the Case for Open Education
As you will see, this portion of the workshop defines the problem:
- The cost of and way of funding higher education is different than ever before.
- The high cost of textbooks is the one part of cost of higher education where faculty have agency.
- Students avoid the cost of textbooks in a number of ways.
- The high cost of textbooks negatively impacts student academic success.
While these four points are central to this part of the workshop, notice the ways Dr. Mapes pairs data with stories, shares both national and local data, and avoids blaming anyone for the current state of affairs. This effective and constructive way of talking about open is essential to the OEN's method for engaging and empowering faculty.
