Upcoming French Election

French voters will head to the polls on April 10 to vote for one of 12 candidates. If a candidate wins more than 50% of the votes, they will take office on May 13. If one candidate does not win 50% of the votes, a secondary election will occur between the top two candidates to see which will take office the following month. Emmanuel Macron, the current French president, represents the Republic on the Move party and has had a significant lead in polls for over six months. Macron has been president since 2017. Presidential term lengths in France are five years and they are renewable once, for a total of 10 years.

France’s Solidarity in the Ukraine Conflict

After the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on February 24, France has committed itself to providing aid to the Ukrainian people. France has released 100 million euros to assist with immediate humanitarian aid and has adopted the EU sanctions against Russia that target Russia’s financial system. France has also taken on a large number of individuals fleeing from the conflict and is assisting them with shelter, accessing legal help, and jobs.

World Cup 2022

On April 1, the final draws for the 2022 World Cup were finalized. The schedule has put France in Group D. In this grouping, France will go against Denmark, Tunisia, and the winner of the international playoffs between Peru and Australia/UAE. The World Cup 2022 is scheduled to take place in late November and spans into December of this year. France has won the last two World Cups, winning 2014 and 2018. France’s strengths in the World Cup are the quality of positions, and their counter-attack speed, but they also have an overreliance on one of France’s star players, Kylian Mbappe, who is expected to play.
