“NATO member Turkey, opposed to sanctions, in bind over Ukraine”
Turkey finds themselves in a sticky situation over the growing tensions between Russia and Ukraine as Western Europe and the United States plan to impose significant trade sanctions on Russia. Turkey generally has strong ties to both Russia and Ukraine. Turkey does not condone Russia’s current militaristic activity toward Ukraine, nor is Turkey in favor of a long bloody war between the two. That said, they are critical of plans to impose heavy santions on Russ. Russia is an important energy supplier for Turkey in addition to being significant source of tourism and trade. Heavy sanctions against Russia would have serious impacts to the stability of the Turkish economy.
“We Have All Gone Into Debt’: Soaring Bills Deepen Crisis for Turks”
With inflation on the rise, Turks are seeing prices of electricity, goods, and services at record highs. People are posting pictures of their electricity bills, at 2 to 3 times the typical price, online in a public outcry to the current administration who is responsible for setting the price of electricity. Prior to the pandemic, Turkey was already fighting off an economic recession. The pandemic sent things into a tailspin that the administration is having a hard time recovering from. In a public statement, President Erdogan asked Turks to be reasonable, reminding them that it was his administration that solved Turkey’s energy shortage crisis to begin with, and that Turks have the lowest energy costs of any other developed nations in the region.
