Student Health Benefit Plan

UMD Homecoming

All students who are 1) admitted to a degree program, and 2) registered for six or more credits per semester (or three or more credits during summer term) that count towards the automatic assessment of the Student Services Fee, are required by the University of Minnesota to have health insurance. Students who meet both of these criteria are automatically enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (a charge of $1,398 per semester). By requiring students to have health insurance, the University ensures all students have access to medical care and can maintain good health, which is essential for academic success. Students may choose to waive the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan by providing proof of enrollment in alternative eligible health insurance.

The Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) is a cost-effective, comprehensive health plan designed to meet the unique needs of students.  Health plan network and claims administration services for the SHBP are provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross), giving you access to thousands of providers and hospitals in its worldwide network. Find plan details, including the benefit brochures and full benefits summaries here.

  • no deductible
  • access to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota worldwide network

Again, if you already have health coverage...

If you have health coverage through another plan/provider, it is important that you waive/cancel the Student Health Benefit Plan by the deadline (click here for instructions).  If you do not, you will be enrolled and billed the associated premium ($1,398) for the entire semester. The waiver opens on December 1, 2022 and the deadline to submit the waiver is February 2, 2023. Please visit the Office of Student Health Benefits website for next steps and details.
