Meet with Leadership Activity Heads Up (Due April 30)

In this activity, you'll meet with your library's dean or director or if you can with your institution's vice president or provost. If you think it would be helpful, you can also include your immediate supervisor in the meeting. Note that this assignment isn't due until Module 5 (April 30, and then you post a discussion about it, but we want you to have ample time to set up a meeting).

Because we know it can be challenging to book a meeting with a busy administrator, we're giving you the flexibility to schedule around their availability and hold this discussion during any of the upcoming weeks. We recommend meeting for at least 30 minutes.

If other members of your institution or system are participating in this year’s Certificate, we encourage you to meet together as a group with your leadership. If you do meet together, please write up and submit individual recaps for this activity. We’re interested in your individual takeaways and perspectives.

It's important to have a shared understanding of the vision for your OER program and also the scope of your role. Leading an OER program is time consuming. It can easily be a full-time job for one or more people. But it's often just one of many duties we've been assigned.

Suggested questions to ask your dean/director/supervisor:

  • What's your vision for our OER program?
  • What resources will the institution commit to our OER program (personnel, funding for grants and/or events, travel to OER conferences, etc.)?
  • How do you envision my role in our OER program? How does that fit into the scope of my current job description? What percentage of time will I be able to devote to OER or affordability programs? Is there anything that can be moved off my plate to make more time to focus on OER?
  • What's the most important thing for me to accomplish in the next year?

After you've met, put your questions in a Word document and write several paragraphs summarizing your discussion. Submit this assignment in Module 5
