4.0 Introduction to Building a Program

Previous participants have noted that this module is more reading-intensive than previous ones, so you may need some additional time for it.

Learning Objectives

In this module, we'll start to:

  • Describe successful OER programs at other institutions, noting specifically how they leverage local collaborations and alliances.
  • Reflect upon strategies you think would work well on your campus and why.
  • Identify specific stakeholders you have already engaged and those you may want to begin engaging with at your institution and specific strategies for engagement.
  • Synthesize what you’ve learned to improve your pitch to students, faculty, or your administration.

Why This Module Is Important

This is the module where we begin to move beyond definitions and into application and action. We'll begin to build our bridge between the online portion of the certificate and the development of your Action Plan. We learn by doing, so let's start doing!

How This Fits Into the Larger Picture

You've learned a lot about open education by this point in the certificate program. As you move through this module, keep this question in mind: "What does success look like for your program?" How can you start to apply your knowledge to achieve success for you, your program, and your institution? This module zooms out and transitions our view to the future — what does it mean to build a lasting, collaborative, and sustainable OER program? What are the programmatic actions you'll need to take to get there?
