- Articulate the purpose and distinguishing characteristics of copyright, fair use/dealing, and the public domain;
- Explore the opportunities and limitations of fair use/dealing, copyright, and Creative Commons licenses.
Assignment Overview
In this part of our first module, you will be watching three videos on copyright, public domain, fair use, and Creative Commons to ensure a foundational understanding of these issues fundamental to engagement in OEP. Librarians, we understand that this may be all review for you, so if you prefer, please feel free to skip this portion. There is no assessment component in this activity, however, content covered here will be included in the self-test at the end of this module.

Watch the following three brief resources for an overview of copyright, Creative Commons, and attribution and fair use in open education.
- Watch What is Copyright (5:26) by the U.S. Copyright Office.
- Next, watch Cable Green Explaining Creative Commons and OER in by Polimi OpenKnowledge (7:06).
- Finally, watch Copyright in Open Education, Part I (3:46) by Abbey Elder, paying particular attention to the first 1:23 on attribution.
