Module 1, Activity #3: Discussion of Articles from Open at the Margins (PUBLIC)

Learning Objectives

  • Define characteristics of inclusivity, empowerment and authenticity in open education.
  • Discuss benefits and limitations of using OERs, with special consideration of cultural relevance.

 Assignment Overview

In this final part of the module, you will have an opportunity to read and discuss an article about open educational practices (OEP) that encourages  you to think critically about engaging in OEP in a way that does not exacerbate or reproduce inequities. While the readings have been chosen for your role specifically, please always feel free to read anything suggested for your partner as it may provide helpful context for you and help to broaden your understanding of the issues surrounding OEP.

For Instructors:

  1. Please read the article entitled “Reflections on Generosity of Spirit: Barriers to Working in the Open” Links to an external site. by Samantha Streamer Veneruso from Open at the Margins Links to an external site. and Samantha Streamer’s blog “Open Pedagogy - #Unfinished.”  Links to an external site.

  2. By Thursday, please ensure you review the Certificate in OEP Discussion Rubric Links to an external site.and then respond to the following discussion forum prompt on the Open at the Margins Discussion Forum: According to the Samantha Streamer Veneruso, “Without understanding the barriers to the generous spirit that we need to nurture to support open education, open pedagogy and practices, we will not be able to move forward.” As you think about yourself and your teaching and learning environment, which characteristics of open pedagogy are most appealing to you, and which barriers do you think will be most challenging for you to overcome as you engage in open educational practices? Please explain by scrolling to the bottom of the page, inputting your text and pressing "Reply."
