 Assignment Overview

Last week, we dove into the hallmarks of OEP and focused squarely on the benefits of incorporating OEP into your classrooms. The purpose of this discussion is to critically examine OEP—both its benefits and drawbacks—to ensure that we are supporting and empowering all of our students when engaging in these practices.


 Guidelines

Watch or read ONE of the following resources and then answer the discussion board prompt below:

  1. Read: Inclusive Open Education: Presumptions, Principles, and PracticesLinks to an external site. by Benjamin Croft and Monica Brown 
  2. Watch: Open Education for Land Back by Jessie Loyer


3. Watch: Creating a Socially Just Open Education by Jasmine Roberts-Crews 

4. Consider the following passage from the Croft and Brown article: “Through discourse that touts the benefits of open education without critically assessing its assumptions, academics and leaders have the potential to normalize and propagate problematic practices. The absence of justice-oriented considerations may amplify the potential for socially constructed norms, values, and priorities to do harm, particularly when minimizing or dismissing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dominant narratives and unchecked assumptions may tacitly reify entrenched institutional and social hierarchies by overlooking, invalidating, or ignoring the lived experiences of students and faculty (Gourlay, 2015).” 

5. By Sunday of Week 1, please share something useful you learned about the potential harms of implementing OEP without careful planning. How might you circumnavigate these issues in your classroom? For librarians, what support can you offer your faculty partner and/or their students? If you don't want to write, please feel free to use another tool (video, infographic, etc) to demonstrate your reflection.
