Module 6, Activity #1: Communicating Our Values Discussion (PUBLIC)

 Learning Objectives

  • Identify effective OEP practices for curriculum, assessments, instruction, and instructional evaluation.
  • Develop clear, measurable, scaffolded student learning outcomes and new academic/content language.
  • Design inclusive and renewable assignments aligned to course outcomes.
  • Create differentiated instruction aligned to objectives and assessments and incorporate aspects of universal design for learning (UDL).
  • Assess learning and aspects of the instructional design.

 Assignment Overview

Over the course of the past few weeks, you have developed a project together that signifies a shift in the way both of you view the role of OEP in the classroom. In this discussion, we ask that you consider how you will communicate the value of this project to your colleagues—whether that is fellow faculty or librarians at your institution, other institutions, administration, or other colleagues that may be interested in the “why.”

We ask that you consider the value from multiple perspectives: to the students, to your various fields of study, to advancing justice and equity, and even to yourself and your work.

 Guidelines

For both Librarians and Instructors:

  1. Read Practitioner Perspectives: The DOERS3 Collaborative on OER in Tenure and PromotionLinks to an external site.
  2. By Thursday, please respond to the following discussion forum prompt on the Communicating our Values Discussion Forum by selecting Reply below. Please feel free to respond in ways other than text if you prefer.
    • "How will you communicate the value of your work to your colleagues?"
    • Feel free to cite any resources you found helpful in constructing this response. You may consider how you might frame the conversation for different people—colleagues vs. admin for example. You may also consider how your institution's goals might affect how your audience views OEP. For example, a community college might value the workforce readiness and practical applications of concepts that OEP can supply, whereas a research-focused institution might value OEP work more if you have conducted Scholarship of Teach & Learning (SoTL) on your course outcomes. The piece to always consider is how to convey the importance of this work to others.
  3. Please respond as you feel appropriate to your colleagues by Sunday.
