Module 5, Student Empowerment, Representation & Agency Overview (2 weeks)
Learning Objectives
- Develop introductory and framing learning experiences that link academic content to students' lived experiences and openly share learning behaviors.
- Provide students with an opportunity to share their perspectives and feedback on learning objectives, learning materials, and learning experiences.
- Modify existing assessments to support student-generated and co-created academic materials that respect students' agency and ownership of their intellectual property, including roadmaps for conceptual and academic language, authentic connections to students' background, student choice, and/or offering multiple means of representation.
Overview
As education professionals, we need to consider our students as an integral part of our courses. Honoring students' lives, their backgrounds, identities, experiences, motivations, and goals allows for a curriculum with which students can identify and connect. When students' identities are the foundation of their academic experiences, we build upon what they already know and have experienced to create authentic opportunities for understanding the breadth of our academic content.
In this module, you will attempt to center student experiences as you help equip students with an understanding of their rights in the learning experience and contemplate intellectual humility in your own practice. The readings you will engage with explore the intersection between open pedagogy and student rights and will help you think about how the learning you design can be more inclusive and student-centered.
