China’s newly opened megaport in Peru (and its impact on Brazil)
Brazil is a country with increasingly close political and trade relations with China. Therefore, the Brazilian government has shown interest in the megaport of Chancay. What is Chancay? Chancay port complex is about 70 km north of the Peruvian Capital, LIma. It is a project led by the CHinese state-owned shipping company Cosco Shipping Company. This port represents an expansion of China’s presence in Latin America. This terminal will generate new jobs, an easier way to import and export goods from latin america to China. Leonino Dourado, from the Center for China and Asia Studies at the University of the Pacific in Lima, told BBC News Mundo that “the two governments and the company indicate that Chancay should also become a transport hub for Brazilian exports.” The Chancay port should bring major positive economic impacts. There are many hopes that the Chancay port will bring advantages to exports and imports to and from China to Latin America. Which includes Brazil. This could dramatically impact the costs of imports and exports.
‘There are days when the school closes because children don’t have water to drink’ This is Jose’s story
Jose was born and raised in Brazil. He states “we’re living through a drought that has lasted more than 10 years.” Where he believes there is less rain each year. The land the indigenous people of Brazil used to survive off of is no longer enough for them to live a sustainable life. The indigenous people are being closed off and their land taken away from them. Where there isn't an indigenous person in charge of the land. Therefore, there is someone in charge of the land that doesn't know much about it. Which drastically changes the effects of climate change on the land. Jose states, “there has been rationing because there is very little water to consume,” and continues, “there are days when the school closes because the children don’t have water to drink, and when women have to go down to the ITacarambi River to wash clothes and bathe.” He claims the drought and rivers drying up is only the fault of the big businessmen. Joses writes how some young people think about committing suicide because of how bad the drought and food scarcity. He and the indigenous people of Brazil hope that Tupa will make the weather better but they still need help from man. Jose states, “but man needs to do his part, to stop so much deforestation, to stop the war, to stop killing the innocent, because in Brazil, it’s the Black and Indigenous people who die most often, because they’re innocent.” Joses believes that the indigenous heritage is a fight. That they won’t stop fighting for their land and their rights. He believes that they have to live and fight for their land if they want it to get better.
Who are the Brazilians convicted for January 8 arrested in Argentina
The Argentine justice system has ordered the arrest of 61 Brazilians who are in the country and are fugitives in Brazil after being convicted of participating in the coup acts of January 8, 2023, in Brasilia. Where two Brazilians have already been arrested, the Argentine government had sent the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs a list of Brazilians who had requested refuge in the neighboring country after the conviction. Many of the convicted Brazilians tried seeking asylum in Argentina. However, just a month ago Argentina’s legislation determined that asylum cannot be granted to people convicted of serious crimes in their country of origin. Therefore, the convicted Brazilians in Argentina can be evicted back to their country and convicted of their crime if they are caught. Many of the convicted Brazilians that have been arrested are sentenced to 14 years or longer in prison for violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, attempted coup d’etat, qualified damage or deterioration of listed property, and some with armed criminal association. The Brazilian government is just starting to release the names of who was arrested, how old they are, and their sentence length. This seeks out support from Argentina to Brazil in the arrests of many wanted fugitives in Brazil. There will continue to be many more arrests made within Argentina and Brazil as the fugitives are no longer welcome in the neighboring countries.
