Instructions

This Global Cultures Midterm Exam will be available all week, from 12:01 am, Monday, 7 October 2024 - 11:55 pm Saturday, 12 October 2024 (10:00 p.m. start)

    • This midterm exam is timed. You have 2 hours once you are in the quiz itself.

    • Be sure to save your work often as you go.

      • NOTICE: You may not be able to save any work once the test time expires!

    • First read the information on this page.

      • This is an open-book / open-notes exam. You may bring and use your texts, dictionary, thesaurus, a writing handbook, class handouts, notes, outlines, drafts, memos, and a Ouija board. You may also use references and materials from your other classes and the web, with the caveat, of course, that you properly cite any sources you use.
      • Be sure to save your work often as you go.

        •  You may not be able to save any work once the test time expires!
      • If you would like more information on the Midterm Exam go to <https://www.d.umn.edu/cla/faculty/troufs/anth1095/exams_midterm.html#title>.

    • Answer the FOUR questions that appear once you start your exam.

      • These have been randomly generated from the question pool of the Midterm Exam Questions Discussion assignment.

    • Keep in mind that there is more than one approach you can take in answering these questions.

    • Follow these guidelines:

      • Organize your answer before you begin.

      • Be sure to state:

        • WHAT or who something is.
        • WHEN it .
        • WHERE it occurred or is located (if appropriate).
        • HOW it is important.
        • WHY it is important.

      • State YOUR position or approach clearly.
        • Identify what is your opinion vs. what you have found out based on valid information from the class and class assignments.

      • Cite specific examples or references to support your statements from the course materials and (where appropriate and relevant) from your personal experiences.

      • NOTE: For any, or even all, of the questions you may be asked to include specific materials from the films, slides, and texts. And, generally, you will be asked why you say something. Please keep that in mind when you are preparing for the exam. It is also fine (and sometimes required) that you include your own opinions and experiences in your answers.

        • NOTE: Citing a category or generic name of something is not giving a specific example

      • Mention problem areas or other relevant materials which you would like to consider further in a more thorough statement. That is, when you're finished with your answer, what major questions are still left unanswered?

      • Wherever appropriate use materials from more than one region of the world.
        • For a course in Global Cultures, do not focus any question only on North America.

      • Remember that each of your responses should have a BEGINNING, a MIDDLE, and an END beginning, middle, and an end.

        • SUMMARIZE your argument or discussion.

      • NOTE: Do not discuss any topic at length in more than one question.

      • NOTE: If you get more than one question that asks you to "Pick what you consider to be one important item or topic that . . . " be sure to pick a different item or topic for each of the questions.

Before you Start taking the exam. . .

If you have not had a lot of practice/experience writing essay questions
you might like to stop here and first have a look at what the wise OWL has to say . . .

And even if you have had a lot of experience with essay exams, it never hurts to review . . . it's a short review . . .

  • When will I know my score [grade]?
I begin looking at your results when everyone has finished the exam during the regular exam window. I start the following day and continue until all exams have been reviewed. This week there are about 50 to do, and that takes quite a bit of time; so have patience. However, if you do have a question about the exam or any of your questions, please e-mail when you have the question.

  • How long should the answers be?

Information on length of answers, along with a bit of philosophy, is available on the class Exam web site at <http://www.d.umn.edu/cla/faculty/troufs/anth3635/ceexams_midterm.html#length>.
