INSTRUCTORS (and TA's) READ ME FIRST
This is a blank course template for a class that meets face to face AND has students turn in most (if not all) assignments online. This can include space for discussion forums to continue discussions that started in class. Keep this page unpublished (or remove it) to hide it from students.
Course Layout
- The primary navigation for this course is through the use of Modules Links to an external site.. This template helps guide student progress from one module to the next through Prerequisites Links to an external site.and activity Requirements Links to an external site.. We would recommend changing the home page Links to an external site. from "Pages Front Page" to "Course Modules" after the second or third week of class (of course warning the student prior to the change).
- The Student Orientation (Week 0) module helps students understand how this course site is set-up. If you make change to the course set-up you will most likely want to make changes to this section.
- Along these lines each week starts with an "Overview" page. Some instructors may find this unnecessary. If you decide to remove these pages, make sure you update the Front page links to the overview pages.
- Also if you change the names to these Overview pages, the links on the front page will break and need to be reconnect to the page with the new name .
- We sprinkled Faculty Learning Design and Online Teaching Competencies Links to an external site. throughout this template. Feel free to contact TeachingSupport@umn.edu if you would like further consultation on practicing the competencies.
To use this template with your course
- Go to Commons Links to an external site. and search for "UMN Hybrid Template"
- Select the link to that template
- In the "Import in Canvas" box, search for the course you want to apply the template to
- Select the checkbox next to that course and select the big green "Import into Course" button
- Start to populate (add or edit) the pre-built pages and modules with your content
- Delete (or unpublish) pages or modules you don't use
- Run the link validator Links to an external site.
Note: We recommend doing this if you're building your course from scratch. However, if you already have content inside your course, the template will bring all modular content to the bottom of your previous content. You will then be able to move and rearrange content to fit the template's framework. You will need to check or relink the links on the front page. Email canvas@umn.edu with any questions.
