PART V: MARKET PRICING CULTURES

Ch. 15: American Football

  • Textbook Guiding Prompt

    • This week our Global journey brings most of us home, in a culture characterized by Gannon and Pillai as a "Market Pricing Culture". And with it they pair "American Football" as their choice of a cultural metaphor.

      • Globally, and in almost every other part of the world, "football" is a ball game wherein all but the goalkeeper (also known simply as "the keeper") use only their feet (and occasionally their heads) to manipulate the ball. Most people from the U.S.A. (not to be confused with "America") call that version "soccer".

      • Originally "soccer" contrasted with the English "rugby", a similar game (at the time) wherein players were allowed to carry the ball in their hands.

      • The term "America" most properly refers to the North and South American Continents, albeit to many, in slang, it also means the U.S.A.
        • “America” consists of most of the Western Hemisphere, and is conveniently divided into “North America” (a continent) and “South America” (another continent).

        • The “United States” is one of thirty-five countries in “America”, and one of the twenty-three countries in “North America”.

      • As you read the chapter ask yourself if the "American Football" cultural metaphor is a good fit for the U.S.A.

        • Try to think of a different cultural metaphor that might be a better one for the U.S.A.

    • When you are finished reading this chapter, you should clearly understand the cultural metaphor and all of its parts, and why Gannon and Pillai chose "American Football" to represent a large and culturally complicated country, when something like "The Mall of America" might be a better fit.

    • You should also be able to explain the metaphor to a recently arrived female college exchange student from New Caledonia, including how the metaphor relates to a U.S.A. Great Gathering called "The Super Bowl".

      • You should also be able to explain to the student what "Market Pricing Cultures" are all about.
