Understanding Global Cultures Textbook Cover

After you take the Midterm Exam . . .

Read Textbook

PART VI: CLEFT NATIONAL CULTURES

Ch. 17: The Malaysian Balik Kampung

Ch. 18: The Israeli Kibbutzim and Moshavim

  • Textbook Guiding Prompt

    • First pay attention to what Gannon and Pillai call “Cleft National Cultures".

      • What features characterize them as "Cleft"?

      • Apart from those "Cleft" features, how are they like non-"Cleft" cultures that we have been looking at so far in the course?

      • And check to see if the In-the-News reports are in on Malaysia and Israel.

    • When you are finished reading these materials, you should understand the nature and characteristics of “Cleft National Cultures" in general, and well enough to explain what that means to a high-school friend who just found out that you are planning a two-month trip to Malaysia.

    • And you should understand the culture metaphor of Balik Kampung for Malaysia, and the cultural metaphor of Kibbutzim and Moshavim for Israel, well enough to explain what they are to your younger brother or sister (or a young neighbor that you have known for a number of years).

    • And, as with all of the countries we consider this semester, you should be able to locate Malaysia and Israel on a blank map (even if the blank map is upside down) . . .
