GC Wk4 OVERVIEW TO BEGIN MODULE 4

Purpose

This week we check on the news, chat live, and explore the world of the Aatsinki family of Sami Cowboys of Finland. And the readings also focus on Finland, using “The Finnish Sauna” as its metaphor.

  • In the slides this week we look at the "Comparative Method as a Major Approach" in   Anthropology.

  • Our dessert this week is a serving of Häagen-Dazs. And we’ll have a little ketchup with that ice cream.
  • In our Discussion we'll ask the question "What does it take to be happy?"

  • REM: Your Informal Project Proposal is due Week 6. It’s actually pretty simple; basically, you just need to let me know what you’re thinking about, and what sorts of resources you think might be useful to you.

Outcomes

  • Continuing our "Real People . . . Real Places . . ." ethnographic profile series, you should come away with an understanding of how people in modern traditions live, in this case the Sami peoples of Finland, in the face of sometimes overpowering globalization

    • And co-incidentally, the Sami Cultural Center of North America is right here in Duluth, Minnesota, so those of you here in Duluth can stroll down and do some real live fieldwork at the museum, with the folks there. It's located at 4915 E Superior St,. #205, Duluth, MN 55804. Phone: (218) 525-4757 Links to an external site..

  • To get some understanding of why countries, year after year, appear at the top of "Happiest Countries in the World" lists . . . and what we can learn from that.

  • You should learn what Häagen-Dazs ice cream is all about, and why it is as good and famous as it is, and that is even topped with a little ketchup for American tastes.

    • You should also learn something about using global languages in advertising, and advertising and marketing in general.
