Week 8
GC Memo

UMD Department letterhead.2 March 2025

What’s Happening Week 8?

This week take a little time to go over your Midterm exam—with an eye on the Final Exam. Going over the Midterm oftentimes helps when it comes to preparing for the Final Exam. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know.

This week we’re off to Turkey where we’ll meet Elif, a 12-year-old Turkish girl, who will tell us about her religious Sufi spiritual journey, up-until-so-far, similarly to the way Chai Thao two weeks ago introduced us to her Hmong traditions in Appleton, Wisconsin. Elif is part of the Mevlevi Brotherhood, known as “Whirling Dervishes” in the Western world. They are a part of Sufi/Mystic traditional Islam.

We’ll also check on the news from Turkey, and from Mexico, another country categorized as “Torn National Cultures” by Gannon and Pillai. And we visit both countries in the text.
