GC Extra Credit Review
Background: As mentioned in the Note on Videos and Visual Anthropology one of the Four Main Characteristics of American Anthropology is is fieldwork, and the next best thing to hopping a bus or plane is going to places and viewing subjects by film, and so we recommend that for extra credit you do a film report.
Although in Global Cultures we view a substantial number of videos, in the area of Global Cultures many hundreds of quality films exist--including feature films, documentaries, "shorts," interesting YouTube vignettes.
But you may also do a review of an article, or of a lecture, or or an event.

- For lectures, keep an eye out for announcements from UMD, St. Scholastica, UWS, Fond du Lac College, Lake Superior College, and the Duluth Public Library.
- The lecture topic must be germane to Global Cultures
- For events, keep an eye out for community events in general, as well as the colleges and library mentioned above.
- For articles, keep an eye out in the serious public press, and on serious web sites
- You might have a hobby, or special interest, that you can look at in global cross-cultural setting

Choose an Extra Credit Option
You can earn 18 extra credit points by writing a review of a public lecture or event, or by doing a film / lecture / event review on an optional qualifying film or video lecture presentation.

Film Review

- For the Film / Lecture Review Option choose a feature-length film or a documentary that is not assigned in class and review it, as you might for a column in your college newspaper.
- For this type of a film review you should normally include . . .
- An Introduction
- giving basic information, and your overall general impression of the film
- A brief summary of the main features of the film
- An Analysis
- of the main content items of the film
- with supporting argument/specific information
- your personal reaction
- of the main content items of the film

- include a recommendation, if you think that is appropriate

- The event must be germane to Global Cultures
- You can also do a review of an appropriate theater performance or exhibition

For example, the Sami Cultural Center of North America Links to an external site., Duluth, MN, U.S.A., is an excellent source for information on the Sami peoples. The Sami Cultural Center serves descendants of Sami immigrants to North America and others interested in discovering and celebrating Sami culture and history. You could visit the Center and review your visit.

Criteria
LENGTH: Your report should be about two pages (about the length of a movie review in a newspaper or magazine), with at least two parts, (1.) a summary of the film, lecture, or event, and (2.) your personal reaction to it.
Note: Your style and length will vary, depending upon the audience, purpose, style, message.

- STYLE: For the Paper, academic
- LENGTH: Your report should be a page and a half or so (about the length of a movie review in a newspaper or magazine), with two parts . . . (1) a summary of the film or lecture or event, and (2) your reaction to and evaluation of it

NOTE: The Gradebook entry for Extra Credit requires that “out of zero” be used when setting up an Extra Credit assignment.

- AVISO: Late Extra Credit Papers will not be accepted unless (1) arrangements for an alternate date have been arranged in advance, or (2) medical emergencies or similar extraordinary unexpected circumstances make it unfeasible to turn in the assignment by the announced due date. Why?
