Student Health Benefit Plan
All students who are 1) admitted to a degree program, and 2) registered for six or more credits per semester (or three or more credits during summer term) that count towards the automatic assessment of the Student Services Fee, are required by the University of Minnesota to have health insurance. Students who meet both of these criteria are automatically enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (a charge of $1,800 per semester). By requiring students to have health insurance, the University ensures all students have access to medical care and can maintain good health, which is essential for academic success. Students may choose to waive the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan by providing proof of enrollment in alternative eligible health insurance. Approved waivers are valid for one year.
The Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) is a cost-effective, comprehensive health plan designed to meet the unique needs of students. Duluth students carrying the SHBP plan have 100% coverage for medical care received at UMD Health Services. Services outside of UMD HS follow plan details for coverage benefits. Feel free to review the forms, brochures & ID cards available on the SHBP website.
Health plan network and claims administration services for the SHBP are provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross), giving you access to thousands of providers and hospitals in its worldwide network.
Key features of the plan include:
- 100% coverage of essential benefits
- $250 deductible
- 80% coverage of eligible expenses after meeting the deductible
- Access to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota worldwide network
- Preventive and periodontal dental benefits for the primary member (student) - additional coverage can be purchased through the Dental Buy-Up Plan
- Year-round coverage (enrolled & paid each semester)
If your student already has health coverage through another plan/provider, it is important that they waive/cancel the Student Health Benefit Plan by the deadline. If your student does not waive the plan, they will be enrolled and billed the associated premium ($1,800) for the entire semester. The online Health Coverage Declaration to waive coverage will open in June and can be completed through your student’s MyU page.
