What Is Phase 2 All About?

Phase 2 of the Certificate program begins after the conclusion of the five-module online course and goes through September. It's a time to share ideas, get to know your cohort members better, access expertise, and add to and finalize your Action Plan.
Throughout the summer, there will be synchronous all-cohort meetings and monthly synchronous meetings with your individual cohort.
- The all-cohort meetings are optional, but we strongly encourage attendance. When possible, those meetings will be recorded.
- Your participation is expected at the monthly individual cohort meetings, so please let your instructor know if you can't make a meeting. You can request that the session be recorded so you can catch up later. We understand that we're all busy, working adults and life happens, but we also think this time will be valuable for you.

Suggestions for Getting the Most Out of Phase 2

Work with your instructor and cohort members to get monthly meetings on the calendar as soon as possible.
Before the monthly synchronous cohort meetings, engage with the Canvas resources offered that month in Module 6. They're a chance to do deeper dives into topics from Modules 1-5, and to expand your knowledge and build your skills in other areas. Engaging fully will help you get the most out of the program and provide you with the most resources.
Contribute to your cohort's monthly agendas. You might want to suggest topics that you're currently finding challenging (e.g., building partnerships, dealing with an upcoming vendor sales pitch to administrators, planning a learning community or OER trainings, creating resources for student advocacy on textbook issues or on creating/modifying OER, adapting templates of author MOUs or student permission forms).
Think outside the box. Would your cohort like to collaborate on a shared resource?
Consider sharing resources across all cohorts when you come across good ones or create new ones that you think might be helpful.
Plan ahead to meet the Sept. 19 Action Plan deadline! Consider blocking out time on your calendar to create new content (e.g., more SMART goals, Executive Summary) and to copy over content you created in Modules 1-5.
Please know that you can reach out to your instructor for one-on-one advice regarding your Action Plan.
Use your cohort members as resources; you each have different experiences, skills, and abilities, and this is your opportunity to share your collective expertise with each other.

After the Certificate Program

You'll have access to this Canvas course for one year after the program ends. The Open Education Network also publicly shares the curriculum, which is openly licensed. Look for the latest version of the curriculum on the Certificate information page.

A Pep Talk

This Certificate program covers a LOT of information. You might feel like you've been drinking from a firehose, especially if you're new to open education. Those of us immersed in this work for 10+ years often feel that way too! Open education work spans many different areas of librarianship (e.g., instruction, reference, electronic resources, publishing, copyright, licensing). There are always new things to learn.

It takes time to build an open education program. You're planting seeds. You're building relationships. It's a long game. Celebrate your wins and successes (and share them!).

The Certificate curriculum is designed to serve as an ongoing reference for you. Communities of Practice are another great resource. The open education community is generous, supportive, and incredibly helpful.
