The following activities will be presented at the Fall CIS French Workshop on October 26, 2021 via Zoom. These activities are all virtual and can take place asynchronously. You can complete all or none of these activities, as they are all optional. I would suggest having Thanksgiving be the cut-off date for completing any of these virtual activities for the field day, as usually live field days are held in October.

Proposed activities (some need to be voted upon; see wording in maroon):

1. If you would like to participate in the high-school exchange during which your students speak French to other students at another high school, you will need to set up the time and the date on your own. This would replace the traditional coffee break during a live field day.

Betsy will present the results of her survey asking you of your interest in this activity.

It is up to you how you wish to have accountability for this activity. Perhaps your students would fill out a questionnaire similar to the ones we have used in the past at the U for the coffee break (see TWO attached files in this module).

2. Virtual tour of the Department of French and Italian. This would include 3 videos, with links featured below, and a photo montage (video).

What I need to know from you is whether you want me to design EITHER a formal worksheet with questions in French on these items OR a dialogue/partner activity in French for your students to do in class (or potentially outside of class, like we often do at the U, especially recordings during remote teaching). You could also just have impromptu responses to these videos in class.

3. On the site for French and Italian (French and Italian online, CLA), you can also find a page dedicated to "language resources."

This includes a link to the Language Center. The LC would normally be part of the "Scavenger Hunt," which is a walking tour, during the "live" field day.

For the LC, have students visit the TandemPlus page. My students are taking part in exchanges with students in Montpellier this semester. These students attend the Université Paul Valéry.

5. Sample student work--i.e. what you can accomplish in advanced courses at the U. These are all student samples from my advanced courses, and these showcase the creative work done by advanced students of French.

Again, what I need to know from you: what kind of reactions would you want from the students? Maybe they would be surprised that we feature more creative projects in our advanced French courses, such as graphic novels.

Part B: French 3016 (follow same directions as above on the Class Info page): Graphic novels designed by students based on our reading of "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi. Inspired also by our discussion post on "le dépaysement." See my Powerpoint Presentation from "The Share Fair" in FRIT (spring, 2020):"Dessine-moi un roman graphique: Satrapi’s Persépolis in French 3016" (posted in this module for the virtual field day).

6. If you would like to feature our speaker from 2019, there is a video interview of Estelle Arnaud-Battandier, with Tom Halloran asking the questions. In addition, there are questions for students and a biography, all featured in this same module for the field days (2019, 2021).

7. This one is totally optional: My article published this month in Reflets de l'Étoile du Nord on my experiences teaching Intermediate French remotely for two and a half semesters at the U. These are the same courses you teach: French 1003 and French 1004. This article is being republished by the Language Center this week, so I will add the link later on for ease of access. Here is the link! The article is also currently featured on the homepage of FRIT.

The article is a follow-up to my Zoom article on advanced courses of French. This first article includes a description of my teaching of La peste by Albert Camus during the summer of 2020. This article is posted on the home page for FRIT at the U. Here is a description of the course that featured La peste (also posted above).
