Metal Tools (not welder)
Prerequisite: Cage Access
David will help you with metal tools when you come to weld. The metal shop tools are all locked up and ONLY David can give you access. Be nice to him.
PPE is no loose fitting clothes, hair tied back, safety glasses, face shield, and ear protection (optional).
Here are the tools we have and what they are used for:
Grinders - used for grinding off burr edges or extra metal material (Grinders should only be used for metal!!) Angle grinders can also use a cutting blade. MAKE SURE you are using the right blade for the job! There are blades for cement and metal and for both grinding and cutting.
Hazards with grinders include include rotational entanglement, flying metal, heat, and noise.
PPE For angle grinder is
- No loose fitting clothes, hair tied back,
- Gloves
- Safety glasses and face shield
- Secure the material well
- Ear protection is recommended but not required (this can get pretty loud)
- Proper operation requires two hands!
- Make sure you use the right wheel and it is attached properly. If you don't know. ASK!!

- Do not use gloves with bench grinder!
- Operation Notes:
- Make sure the wheel is in good shape
- ONLY metal!! No aluminum, plastic or wood.
- Start slow when making contact with the wheel
- Don't grind on the side of the wheel!
- Make sure the tool rest and the wheel guard is in place
- Use the small glass shield.
Metal Chop Saw
Used for cutting metal to length.
- Hazards include flying metal parts and shrill sound.
- PPE is no loose fitting clothes, hair tied back, safety glasses, face shield, and ear protection.
- Operation notes: Cut edges - not flat. Let the saw do the work.
