Three kinds of Strawberries

  • June Bearing: flowering triggered with shortened daylight (10 hours or less). Trigger happens in the fall which is why they have berries in June. Lots of runners with these.
  • Everbearing - Long day triggers fruiting. Typically planted in annually in the spring.
  • Day Neutral - No photo period impact. Light needed for vegetative and daughter. 12 on 12 off should be fine. This is what would grow and produce all year inside the house!!

Other important notes

  • Plants require a dormant cycle. Force this with Day neutral. 6 weeks in the fridge. Cut vegetation down to the crown first.
  • Soilless media is  used to avoid soil born pests and pathogens. Recommend Coconut Coir
  • Consistent watering. Maybe a meter (see video). Twice a day even. . . . Well drained!!
  • Fertilizer is slightly acidic and about even with NPK. They don't use as much nitrogen as vegetables (e.g. tomatoes)
  • Perfect flowers so pollinators are not required. Just shake the plant. (perfect flowers means both male and female parts in flower)
  • Sterilize pruning tools
