Cage Access Module: Start Here

If you are not seeing the quiz on the next page then you need to "Join the Course" Top Right Column Home Page.

This module is required to gain access to the Makerspace.

Completion of this training allows you access to the "caged area" and allows you to work with any tools that do not require electricity to operate with the only exception being the battery powered electric drills. Our focus for this access is on safety and respect for the space and tools. NOTE: Access is only permitted for BBE (&SSM) students, staff and faculty.

Who is Allowed?

  • Only BBE students, faculty and staff are currently permitted for getting Makerspace Access.
  • BBE students are the primary audience for this space. The rest of us are just using their space.
  • Swipe to get in. Leave cage door open when you are inside (safety). Close it when you leave!!
  • If you break any of the rules we have the right to permanently suspend your access to the space. Or suspend for some amount of time correlated to the infraction. Or rip out your fingernails
  • This access training is only for the hand tools. The most powerful thing you can use is the electric drill (Battery operated). That does not mean you can't get hurt. There are still sharp things and when it comes to a hammer vs. thumb, hammer wins every time.

This is YOUR Space

  • Clean up after yourself every time you leave the space. This is not "Joe the janitor's job" or David's, or Derrick's.
  • Return tools to their proper place as part of your cleanup. (Note color on tools.)
  • Do not cut or drill into work surfaces!!
  • Cleanup happens anytime you leave the space except for a bathroom break. We don't care if you will use them again later in the day. Someone else might need them while you are gone.
  • We have no budget for stuff you use (consumables). Research projects - buy your supplies and leave the extra to the makerspace. Students: We hope to have grants for buying stuff for your projects but until that time, you have to purchase your own stuff. Sorry.
  • Report broken tools (leave note on clipboard.)
  • Tools do not leave room #48 or #37 without prior approval.

Be Safe!

Four Things to keep you safe: Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), A Clean Workspace, No Rushing, and No Distractions.

Here are some of the details for these four things.

  • Safety glasses worn when any flying debris or dust - this means any power tools including drill.
  • No open-toed shoes. Steel toe boots are fine : )
  • No loose hair, shirt sleeves and shirt tails, etc. Anything dangling could get caught in spinning tools.
  • Ear protection as needed.
  • No clutter in your workspace. Cords on the floor, scraps of wood - clean it up before you start.
  • Distractions might include talking to people, lack of sleep, wandering brain, alcohol - anything that may cause you to lose focus.
  • Go slow and work deliberately. Rushing = accidents.

Other Safety Information

  • Use hand tools for their intended purpose.
  • Cut and carve away from yourself so if the tool slips you don't need stitches.
  • Emergency Procedures:  Fire extinguisher, first aid kit, etc. phone and address for first responders. They should come to building 335 and the address is 1995 Fitch Avenue. St Paul MN. 55108
