When I was first trying to navigate my way through being a fresh university student, I realised that while I found that I was thankfully at a university that I genuinely loved, a lot of my friends had inadvertently enrolled in universities that have turned out to be less than supportive to their students (to say the least). I have always been told this by my parents, and I will always emphasise the point to others now and forever, that your experience as a university student should never come at the expense of your health and wellbeing.
So many universities try to make a big show of being all about the health and the like of their students and teachers. However, what I have found from others telling me their experiences, that so many of them are all about being all talk and no walk. I am so grateful and proud to say that this is not my experience at all. In fact, the University of Minnesota consistently and outwardly encourages a healthy balance for all their students - including, of course, me.
The importance of striking that balance
The healthy balance for students is so crucial. Here, you see it playing out around you all the time. From students taking study breaks to have some lunch on campus with their friends, making business calls to get Instagram followers for their blooming business, or even to those students who actively and consistently participate in study groups to lighten the pressure of upcoming exams a little, there is a lot to be said about the power of striking the ideal balance as a student, and in the University of Minnesota’s role in constantly working to fully embody this role.
A healthy experience as a student
More than anything else, I desperately hoped and wanted my university experience to be a healthy experience. I had heard so many horror stories about friends and family members who had started their degrees with stars in their eyes and excitement on their faces, only to find that their university put an immense and sometimes even seemingly unrelenting pressure on students. For me, however, it was made abundantly clear from the get go that health and the like is the utmost priority. Rightfully so, this is a university that embodies the idea of taking care of your health before anything else - because realistically, no one can be expected to perform their best academically when they are struggling in themselves.
University of Minnesota embodies the difference
My favourite part of being a University of Minnesota student will always be how at home and how overwhelmingly supported I have always felt here. Even on the days that the pressure starts to creep up, I know exactly how, who, and where to go for the assistance that I need to get back on track and back to feeling myself. At the end of the day, yes, the whole point of university is to challenge you, but it should never be at the expense of your health.
