Being a full-time university student comes with as many challenges as it does rewards. Anyone who has ever been a higher education student can tell you that. Of course, the whole point of higher education is to challenge you, however there is nothing in the world quite like the feeling of coming to the end of a course - or even better, your whole degree - and having that feeling of incredible accomplishment. I know a lot of my friends and fellow students know that feeling so well. However, just as importantly is the feeling of struggle.

When I chose the university I wanted to go to, I knew I was going to be essentially choosing an environment to call home for years to come. I wanted to feel like I was encouraged and supported like I always have been at home. I knew that I would not find that exact feeling, but I knew that I could find something close. And I did. One of the aspects of being a University of Minnesota student the most is the complete commitment to recognising and supporting every aspect of the student experience

Recognising that university is about more than good grades

Yes, the primary goal of higher education (and education in general, for that matter) is to broaden one's academic and intellectual understanding, however there is a lot to be said about the tremendous undertaking that comes hand in hand with the awareness and understanding that this experience comes with its challenges. University is about more than good grades. It is about finding yourself and forgiving yourself when you need a break. And ideally, it is also about being in an environment that supports you during those challenging times.

Giving students the support networks that they need when struggling

Here at the University of Minnesota, one of the biggest positives about this environment has been the incredibly supportive nature of this campus and the professionals that educate and guide us through our higher education experience. When we are struggling, we have academic and personal support networks that are designed and intended to provide us with all the support that we need, whenever we need it. It has been a monumental help for myself and so many of my friends here (in many cases, on multiple occasions). I love this about the University of Minnesota.

Supporting students in figuring out their next steps after uni

Whether you are angling to become a full time landlord who owns and manages your own properties around the globe or you want to work for one of the biggest tech companies in the world (or any other type of career opportunity in between or beyond, for that matter), there is a lot to be said for getting the support to find your way throughout your education experience (whether it is through compulsory education or elective higher education, the point remains the same). Through networking events and student counsellor meetings, I have been given every opportunity - and then some - to figure out my next steps as best as I can. I will always be thankful to the University of Minnesota for this (and for so many other points).
