Deciding to attend university is a big decision that anyone who is seriously considering it must be willing and able to put in the work and give the appropriate amount of attention to detail to ultimately make the right decision for themselves. Sometimes, what you thought you wanted in the beginning turns out to be the exact opposite of what you actually want by the time it comes to the point that you have to make your choice. For me personally, my choice came down to two core values that I believe in; academic integrity and excellence and a focus on the health of students and not just on academic success.
It took a while, however I ultimately decided that for me, the University of Minnesota made the most sense. I can thankfully say that this is a decision that I have been able to sit comfortably with. In fact, at the end of the day, I know I made the right decision. It is so important to find a university that has a specific focus on academic excellence and personal victory in every sense. After doing so much research and asking around, it became abundantly clear that the University of Minnesota was a university that also embodied each of these core values of mine. So, I made the choice and here I am.
Taking the time to find the right university for you
There is a process that happens when you start to take a step back and really consider which is the right university for you. I cannot stress enough how important it is to take your time with this process. You never want to rush into a decision as big as this. Think about your own values and which of them you want to look for and invest in most with the university that you ultimately choose to attend. Taking the time to find the right university for you is about making the effort to find the place that feels most authentically aligned with yourself. For me, the University of Minnesota seemed to be the perfect choice. Now, I am happy and excited to say that it definitely was the right choice for me.
The power of a university that genuinely cares
There is a lot of power in a university that genuinely cares about not just the academic performance of its students but also their health, wellbeing, and overall quality of life. I have seen so many higher education students struggle with this as they have chosen a university that cares more about its own reputation than it does about the lives of its students. So, I will say it again. There is so much power in choosing a university that genuinely cares. So, make a point to invest research and time into working towards making that choice for yourself and nobody else. It is the only way.
The incredible difference that makes for students
Whether it is simply offering on-campus psychologists to students or giving them recommendations for an Elmiron vision loss attorney when they are struggling with their health (to name just a few examples among the many), there is so much value in not only seeing but feeling the difference that this makes for students. I have felt it myself. I still feel it. And I know many other University of Minnesota students who also feel it. This difference matters - and it matters in more ways than you can possibly imagine.
