Technology has made life easier beyond imaginations and freed people from tedious tasks. Rice cooking is one of such tasks. Basic Structure

A rice cooker is an automatic kitchen appliance, designed to cook rice. It mainly consists of a heat source, cooking bowl, and a thermostat. The thermostat measures and controls the temperature of cooking bowl. Most advanced rice cooker today have sensors and other AI components.


A basic rice cooker consists of a main body, inner-pot, electric heating element and a thermostat or other controlling sensors. The bowl is filled with required quantity of rice and water. The heater is turned on, and boils the water. The temperature stays at boiling point and once the water is absorbed the cooker will switch to keep-warm mode. Basic models will simply automatically switch off once rice is ready. Advanced programmable rice cookers use fuzzy logic to fine-tune the cooking process.


It takes approximately 20 to 60 minutes for a rice cooker to complete cooking. The advanced models can reduce cooking time by 50%. The time required depends on the technology used in the rice cooker, a simple rice cooker may take longer when compared with a modern, programmable smart rice cookers.


Traditional rice cooking requires constant attention to make sure rice is not burnt. An automatic electric rice cooker does the job itself by controlling the heat and pressure. A rice cooker does not necessarily reduce cooking time but it reduces the effort involved. The job is reduced to add water and rice into the rice cooker and switch it on.

Cooking method

It starts with measuring and washing the rice before adding to the inner bowl. Some type of grains require initial soaking for 15 minutes or one hour for better results but other types like Jasmine rice do not required to soak for hours. After adding the rice, water is added as per the marks in inner pot which most of the rice cookers have.After the lid is closed, the rice cooker will do rest of the work. Most devices give countdown time. Most of the rice cookers beep once the rice is ready. It is suggested that let the rice rest for at least 5 minutes once its ready. Stir it a little so the rice to prevent it from being sticky.
