Step 2 Design with flexibility and responsiveness

The current teaching and learning situation is challenging for instructors and students because we rely on technology and create learning activities in new learning environments.  The feedback we received from students shows that:

  • not all students have a reliable internet connection or adequate data plans to access and complete course activities and assessments
  • many do not have a computer or an up-to-date phone
  • some do not have access to a suitable space/location to study

When asked about online course activities and assignments, students shared that:

  • they feel they need to do more work in online format than they would have face-to-face
  • need more time and flexibility to access, study and digest course content
  • want more ways to stay connected with classmates and instructor
  • like some consistency  in communication with instructor and format
  • worry about group work responsibilities and quality of input

In addition to technical and course design issues, students are dealing with  numerous life issues:

  • take on more  or less working hours
  • might get sick or take care of sick family members
  • might not have a save place to stay

It is important to establish a communication avenue with students, to know your student audience, and modify or design responsive course assessments, the ones that all students are able to access with whatever technology they have available.

The Student readiness for online learning survey Links to an external site. is a starting point to help evaluate students' needs and learning situations. Please modify the survey to fit your teaching needs. The information you collect from students will help you select appropriate assessment strategies and the right tools.
