Example: Group Project (with Canvas Assignment tool)

This is an example of a group project that uses many tools to support collaboration and submit/present student work.

Provocative Statement Group project

Purpose

The goal of this assignment is to help you:

  • Develop critical thinking skills by exploring personal beliefs, investigating different viewpoints and conducting academic research
  • Enhance personal leadership by applying course concepts, understanding your role in teams, and negotiating a group process
  • Express beliefs, thoughts, and ideas in a coherent, concise, and compelling manner
  • Make choices and be accountable for those choices within a group context
  • Understand how actions impact a group and discern when to act on own, ask for help, and collaborate with others

Recommended workflow

This semester, we have selected five provocative statements. You will work in groups of 3-4 people.  Your first task as a group is to select one statement you will analyze for your project.

  1. The United States should adopt a mandatory 2-year service requirement.
  2. All United States citizens should have the right to vote regardless of criminal history.
  3. Children under 16 should be banned from social media.
  4. The minimum wage in the United States should be $15 per hour.

As a group, you will discuss the  provocative statement of your choice and identify 3-5 questions about your statement that you want to explore more deeply. Your research questions can help you gather more information and compile a wide range of research, rationales, and lived experiences on the issue for a final group presentation.

Each one of you will identify and individually review one source of information.

Submit Part 1 Individual Draft of One Source (5 points)

Then working together, you will synthesize your individual research findings into a final group presentation.

Submit Part 2 Group presentation: Stakeholder Ethics & Values Analysis (40 points)

At the end of the semester  you will present your group presentation to the whole class via Zoom meeting. The date, time, and the URL of the meeting will be announced later.
