Open Textbook Library (Essential)
As a reminder, the Open Textbook Library is central to the faculty engagement strategy the OEN uses. In this section, you'll see how the library is both 1) a key strategy for introducing faculty to open textbooks, and 2) a global resource for the common good.
Video Resource
In this 20 minute introduction to the Open Textbook Library, we go on a brief site tour with Publishing Director Karen Lauritsen.
Our goal for this section is that:
- You will understand where the books in the OTL come from.
- You will understand the criteria for books to be placed into the OTL.
- You will be equipped with details on textbooks including formats, licenses, and reviews.
- You will understand the process of the faculty reviews found in the library.
Here is the slide deck Links to an external site. that accompanies the video if you want to follow along.
***We'll remind you of all the slide decks available to you at the end of the training.
Knowing the details of the Open Textbook Library can often be useful in addressing questions or concerns from faculty. For example, you might hear the concern that the books are only available online. Now you know that every book in the library is available in a downloadable version! Or, you might hear concerns about the book disappearing. Now you know that the books in the library are preserved in a dark archive. We'll talk more about addressing questions and concerns during the synchronous session. Also, some textbooks also include ancillary materials, and we're currently working to make those resources more visible in the book record if so.
