Introduction to OER Adoption Workshop: Part II

Now that we've made the case of open education, it's time to explore solutions.

This next portion of the workshop proposes open as a possible solution to the challenges identified in the first section. In this portion, we will:

  • Define open with a cursory explanation of Creative Commons licenses.
  • Explain the model of open textbook publishing.
  • Illustrate examples of open textbooks.
  • Explore open education as a vehicle for pedagogical innovation, improved teaching and learning, and social justice in classroom content.

The workshop ends by asking faculty to explore an open textbook. We are not asking faculty to make an adoption! We are asking faculty to use their disciplinary expertise to review an open textbook in the Open Textbook Library. Remember from our earlier module, of the faculty who review a textbook, 47% of them indicate an intent to make an open textbook adoption! To invite faculty to write a review via the Data Dashboard, you will need to be in touch with your institution or consortium's Data Dashboard administrator. If you aren't sure who this may be, email Barb at thee0017@umn.edu.
