Ach, Michaels, Zachwieja - Posterior Abdominal Wall Viscera and Diaphragm
Instructor(s): Terri Ach, Robin Michaels, Alexandra Zachwieja
Session Objectives:
- Describe the geographical relationship of the kidneys and suprarenal glands to peritoneal structures and other viscera.
- Name, describe and locate the external and internal gross anatomical features of the kidney. Correlate these regions with the cells and functions of the regions. Identify and locate the vascular supply of the kidney.
- Identify and describe the the features of the suprarenal glands. Trace their blood supply.
- Describe the disposition of the muscular and tendinous portions of the diaphragm, its blood supply, motor and sensory innervation, its major openings and the structures that pass through them
- Trace the lymphatic drainage of the GI tract and associated organs. Use this information to predict likely sites of metastasis of abdominal organs. Describe the relationship of the thoracic duct to these tributaries.
- Identify the muscles of the posterior abdominal wall, describe their actions and relationship to nearby structures.
- Identify the major nerve branches of the lumbar plexus and their geographic relationships. Know the target organs supplied by these nerves. Identify the nerves that form the afferent and efferent limbs of the cremasteric reflex.
- Locate the autonomic plexuses on the posterior abdominal wall and the pathways taken by the pre-and post ganglionic sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers associated with these plexuses.
- Using a system of landmarks, identify and interpret radiographs, MRI and CT scans of normal anatomy
- Define the anatomical bases for the following clinical problems:
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia
Referred pain from the diaphragm to the shoulder region
Hydronephrosis
Renal calculi (kidney stones)
Lithotripsy
Polycystic kidney disease
Varicocoele
