Ach, Zachwieja - Duodenum, Pancreas and Hepatic Portal System; Removal of GI Tract

Instructor(s): Terri Ach, Alexandra Zachwieja

Session Objectives:

  1. Describe the major gross anatomic features of the duodenum and pancreas.   Review their geographic and functional relationships to each other and to other abdominal organs. (Much of this has been covered in labs 2 and 3)
  2. Describe and trace the hepatic portal system. What is its function?  What are its components? Which vessels participate in portal-caval (portal-systemic) anastomoses? How are these anastomoses used to advantage in cases of hypertension? What is the expected anatomic evidence of portal hypertension?
  3. Apply your knowledge of the hepatic portal system to your understanding of portal hypertension. Describe the major pathways for return of venous blood to the heart in the event of obstructions to the portal venous blood flow. What are the clinical vascular manifestations of portal hypertension?
  4. Using anatomical landmarks, identify and interpret normal CT scans and radiographs of the abdomen.
  5. Explain the anatomic basis and ramifications of the following clinical problems:  See also Moore, pp. 505-513
    - Jaundice (as related to various conditions), cirrhosis, pancreatitis,  pancreatic cancer, portal hypertension, caput medusae, internal hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, esophageal varices
