Session Objectives:
- Locate and describe the blood supply to each region of the gastrointestinal tract and associated organs. Review the development of the primitive gut and its relationship with the unpaired arteries from the aorta.
- Trace the arterial anastomoses between branches of the celiac, superior and inferior mesenteric and rectal arteries. Be able to describe the route blood must take in the event of an obstruction somewhere in the abdominal arterial system.
- Identify the superficial gross anatomic features that are characterize the liver, spleen, gallbladder, small and large intestine.
- Differentiate between organs of the GI tract are (intra)peritoneal and those that are retroperitoneal. Which organs are secondarily retroperitoneal?
- Familiarize yourself with cross-sectional anatomy of the abdominopelvic cavity as it pertains to ‘spatial relationships between organs, vessels and nerves in order to interpret scans and radiographs of the normal anatomy of these regions. Identify and use landmarks to navigate CTs and MRIs.
- Define the anatomic basis for the following clinical problems in this region:
- Intestinal Resection, Ulcerative Colitis, Appendicitis; Appendectomy, Rebound Tenderness, Referred Pain, McBurney Point, Peritonitis, Gallstones, GB pain, jaundice, Cholecystectomy, Colostomy, Diverticulitis
