Ach, Zachwieja - Peritoneum and Foregut Viscera
Instructor(s): Terri Ach, Alexandra Zachwieja
Session Objectives:
- Locate and describe the anatomical features of the internal surface of the abdominal wall, including the inguinal triangle, the deep inguinal ring, and the three umbilical folds.
- Review the embryonic development of the primitive gut, its mesenteries and the organization of its blood supply.
- Identify the parietal and visceral peritoneum and the peritoneal extensions that constitute
- the mesenteries and peritoneal ligaments of the abdominal cavity. Contrast the innervation of the parietal and visceral peritoneal layers, especially as it relates to pain sensation.
- Distinguish the greater and lesser peritoneal sacs; identify their boundaries and relationships to abdominopelvic organs. Identify the anatomical site where they are continuous.
- Identify the portions of the GI tract and associated organs that reside in the abdominal cavity ((intra)peritoneal) versus those that are retroperitoneal.
- Distinguish the major peritoneal gutters, recesses, spaces and fossae of the peritoneal cavity.
- How does the anatomy reflect the basis for spread of pathological fluids and cells? Construct a mental image of the complex geometry of the peritoneal cavity.
- Identify major anatomical features of those organs derived from the embryonic foregut including stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen. [We will explore other foregut derivatives in a later session.]
- Familiarize yourself with cross-sectional anatomy of the abdominopelvic cavity as it pertains to spatial relationships between organs, vessels and nerves in order to interpret scans and radiographs of the normal anatomy of these regions. Identify and use landmarks to navigate CTs and MRIs.
