Session Objectives:

  1. Define PaO2, O2 content, %O2 saturation (%Hb saturation) and P50.
  2. Explain how O2 is transported in the blood.
  3. Draw and label an oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve.
  4. Describe how the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve is affected by changes in blood temperature, pH, PaCO2, and 2,3-BPG levels (Bohr Effect)
  5. Explain how CO2 is transported in the blood.
  6. Explain how carbonic anhydrase and the Cl- shift promote the conversion of CO2 to HCO3-
  7. Explain how O2 saturation affects CO2 transport in the blood (Haldane effect) and how PCO2 affects O2 saturation (Bohr effect).
