Anderson - O2 And CO2 Transport
Instructor(s): Lisa Anderson
Session Objectives:
- Define PaO2, O2 content, %O2 saturation (%Hb saturation) and P50.
- Explain how O2 is transported in the blood.
- Draw and label an oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve.
- Describe how the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve is affected by changes in blood temperature, pH, PaCO2, and 2,3-BPG levels (Bohr Effect)
- Explain how CO2 is transported in the blood.
- Explain how carbonic anhydrase and the Cl- shift promote the conversion of CO2 to HCO3-
- Explain how O2 saturation affects CO2 transport in the blood (Haldane effect) and how PCO2 affects O2 saturation (Bohr effect).
