Anderson - Ventilation, Perfusion Matching

Instructor(s): Lisa Anderson

Session Objectives:

  1. Explain the significance of and be able to calculate a person’s alveolar-arterial PO2 difference (A-a gradient or A-aDO2).
  2. Describe a normal ventilation/perfusion ratio ( VA/Q ).
  3. Define ventilation perfusion mismatch
  4. Predict how abnormal ventilation perfusion ratios will affect local PAO2 and PACO2.
  5. Define shunt and dead space.
  6. Explain how Ventilation perfusion ratios vary within the lung in a healthy, upright adult.
