Tigrayan Fighters Agree to ‘Cessation of Hostilities’
In Ethiopia there has been a civil war of sorts going on for about 17 months. They are trying to come to an agreement and end the fighting so they government has stepping in and announced an indefinite humanitarian truce. Because of this truce, Tigrayan rebels have agreed to a cessation of hostilities. This means that the civil war is on the right path to finally be over. The government has urged Ethiopian authorities to speed the delivery of aid to Tigray where hundreds of thousands of people are starving because of the war. This civil war has caused thousands of people to die and millions to be displaced. This war has not been good for Ethiopia at all. The government has finally taken a step and ordered a truce, so the war is nearing its hopeful end.
Analysis on the ‘truce’
As stated in the previous article, Ethiopian government has stepped in an implemented a humanitarian truce. This may not end the fighting, but it is a step in the right direction. This truce was implemented to “ostensibly to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid and end the conflict without further bloodshed.” The United States was very quick to support the proposed truce and aim at ending the civil war going on. This is the first time since the beginning of the fighting that both sides have considered an end to the fighting. This is promising toward the end goal of ridding the fighting and moving on with life. This war has been waged with little mercy. There was a drone strike that killed 50 civilians. Even though they are fighting their own people, they are being ruthless. This truce should help the end of the civil war, which is a good thing for the country.
Ethnic Cleansing in Ethiopia
Ethiopian allied forces raided Abala just before the year started. They left behind hundreds of dead bodies including men, children, and even pregnant women. The allied forces seemed to show no mercy while doing this raid considering they didn’t leave anyone behind. This seems to be a genocide of sorts. The allied forces aimed to eliminate every single Tigrayan they found in the town. They offered protection to everyone else of different ethnicities. There were almost 7,000 people that fled from the cleansing and made it to the camp. On top of eliminating people of the Tigrayan ethnicity, the allied forces also sexually assaulted some of the women. This occurrence is related to the civil war that is going on in Ethiopia, but it is still an event of its own that should be known. These people do not deserve this type of treatment.
