“Denmark lifts Covid Restrictions Despite Omicron Spread”
Currently, the country known for being one of the happiest in the world, has decided to lift Covid restrictions despite the spread of the Covid variant, Omicron. When compared to the United States, throughout the pandemic, Denmark has been very strict with their restrictions. For example, all visitors had to be tested every three days and provide proof of their negative test along with their vaccination card. Despite their extreme efforts, they have seen a large increase in Omicron cases. However, this week, they decided to lift the Covid restrictions which allowed reopening of certain venues including: cinemas, zoos, and theatres. They are planning to continue to list restrictions beginning on January 31st.
“Denmark’s former defense minister charged with leaking state secrets”
In this article, CNN shares that Prime Minister Claus Frederiksen was charged with leaking state secrets. He was arrested in December after a scandal that is being described as a long investigation of leaks. An interesting addition to this article is just days prior, Lars Findsen, a former spy chief, was put in jail for similar allegations and was charged with a sentence of twelve years in prison. This trial took place behind closed doors and no one knows exactly any details of the charges.
“Bjorkstrand named to Denmark’s initial roster for 2022 Olympic Games”
For the first time ever in history, Denmark is sending a hockey team to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games! According to this article, Bjorkstrand, a Danish hockey player, seems to be their star player. He scored three goals and had two assists in the qualifying tournament. I found this interesting because Bjorkstrand actually plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets in Ohio, which is close to home. Super exciting news for the country!
A couple other things I found interesting while browning articles; Denmark is in the European Handball Championship and Mali, an African country, asked Denmark to immediately withdraw their troops deployed there due to failing to follow protocol.
