Part 1: Informal Project Proposal

  • Step 1: Understanding the assignment

The informal statement can be very straightforward. It's a simple statement of . . .

"Here's what I'm interested in doing. . . .

Here's why I'm interested in that. . . . 

Here's what I think will be useful for that project. . . .

What do you think?"

 

Or, it can be something like . . .

"I'm thinking about doing a project on X or Y, but can't make up my mind.

Here's what I'm interested in, and why. . . .

Here are some things that look like they might be useful for the project. . . .

What do you think?"

A more formal statement (a "Promissory Abstract") of what you eventually decide upon isn't due for another two weeks.


This assignment is very similar to what people do when they are writing proposals for things like presenting papers at a conference, or a proposal for the development of an idea in a company, and the like. In this case your assignment is to write a proposal of the project you would like to pursue in this class for the semester (REM the "project" = a term paper and a presentation).

  • identify the topic, or short list of topics (1-3), that you have selected (or are thinking about) along with a one- or two- sentence statement of what you expect/hope to do with your term paper and class presentation topic


  • Last Step: Upload your file

    • In order to upload your file please make sure that you save the file as a .rtf/.doc/.docx file.*
      • *Details on "Type of Files" are available in the "File Type Information" if you need more information on how to save your files on your computer.

    • Upload your assignment. . . .  In your Canvas folder you should be looking at a screen that looks something like the screenshot below.  If you look in the upper right-hand corner of the screen you will see "Submit Assignment" (in a black box with white letters).  The prompts should walk you through the upload.
