You are the Assistant Construction Manager of a construction firm that builds bridges for interstate highways along the eastern seaboard of the United States. Over 800 employees are routinely engaged in the process of logistics, support, and construction. The firm is relatively flat in hierarchy, employing few executives and investing in talented front-line managers and field supervisors. A safety director reports to the Human Resources vice president. Each construction site operates as a separate cost center, thus the project manager is responsible for profit and loss from start to finish. Each construction site valued over $5 million has a dedicated safety professional assigned to assist and advise the project manager.
The CEO is not satisfied with the results of the company’s safety performance. The CEO has asked the Workers Compensation insurance carrier, MEMIC, to conduct an internal culture assessment using the Culture Safety Profile Survey illustrated in Figure 6, page 92 of the textbook. This is essentially a perception survey of how employees and management see safety performance from a cultural perspective. Your supervisor is out on medical leave, and you have been asked to make recommendations to the CEO to improve the safety culture.
After reviewing the MEMIC survey form and reading the textbook, develop tangible action steps that the CEO should consider in order to move the performance of the organization further up the culture profile. Put another way, what actions can the company take to incrementally move closer to the ideal Number 5 in the 10 categories on the culture profile? Six months from now the CEO will conduct another survey to see if any movement has occurred. This may happen every six months or so for a year or two.
